Future star witnessed at Gawler

Racegoers left Gawler believing they had seen a future star after Northern Zhar’s win in the Mitavite/Sanders Fodder Handicap (1111m). Easy in the betting drifting from $2 to start $2.80, Northern Zhar won eased down by five and three-quarter lengths from the sensationally backed Trueno ($4 into $2.50 fav) with Tennessee Groom ($6) a length and a quarter away third. Jockey Jason Holder had the winner under a stranglehold over the last 50 metres and was struggling to hold him back. Winning trainer David Jolly said he knew the four-year-old was good but even he was blown away by the ease of victory. “I actually thought he would be last early but was pleasantly surprised when he settled fourth,” Jolly said, “I knew then he would win.” “I’m still going to just take him through his classes and not rush him but I do believe he can win a good race.”
