Bite Win War of Attrition

November 22, 2015

After grabbing the early initiative, Adelaide Bite held on for a 9-8 victory at Norwood Oval on Sunday against the Brisbane Bandits, to split their Australian Baseball League series 2-2.
With 11 pitchers used in the game, it was almost a “last man standing” duel, which Adelaide won, thanks to seven runs in the first two innings.
After Adelaide starter Dallas Gallant retired the Bandits one-two-three in the first inning, the Bite took advantage of base hits to Travis Demeritte and Stefan Welch in the bottom of the first, when Kyle Petty hit his league-leading seventh home run.
The long ball was a feature of Brisbane's batting on Sunday, with Mitch Nilsson and David Sutherland smashing long home runs to right field to cut the lead to 3-2 at the top of the second frame.
With two out in the bottom of the second, three walks loaded the bases to set up Stefan Welch's three-run double. And he scored on a wild pitch to stake Adelaide to a comfortable 7-2 advantage.
Andy Campbell hit solo home runs for the Bandits in the third and fifth frames, while Petty plated a run for Adelaide in the fourth on his single, to give the Bite an 8-4 lead after five complete innings.
Both sides scored a run in the sixth, with Brisbane making a big push to turn the game on its head in the eighth frame.
With one out, a run in and two men on base, Bandits big hitter Campbell was inches away from tying the game with his third home run, which went foul, just. He still hit a big double to help reduce the margin to a solitary run, 9-8.
Adelaide's sixth pitcher of the game, Kody Kerski came onto the mound and retired the Bandits one-two-three in the ninth and final frame, to end the game and earn the win as the most effective reliever.
From Thursday the Bite start a four-game series in Canberra. With the next home series against Sydney starting on December 3.
