Cahill calls for Memorial Drive upgrade

Highly regarded Tennis coach Darren Cahill has called for an upgrade of the ageing Memorial Drive Tennis venue in Adelaide.

As Cahill is currently in town preparing world number four ranked tennis star Simona Halep for the upcoming Australian Open he thinks its time Adelaide kept up with the rest of Australia.

"I think this is a great stadium it holds a lot of wonderful memories for all of the former South Australian players," Cahill said.

"I think keeping in times of the facilities that we have around Australia, It's time they did something here."

The successful coach's comments should not go un-noticed, if anyone knows what facilities are required in assisting players to the World number one ranked position, its Cahill.

Under Cahill Adelaide's Lleyton Hewitt became World No. 1 as the youngest ever player to do so, then he steered Andre Agassi to World No. 1 as the oldest ever player ever and he says Adelaide needs not just a new tennis venue, but a multi purpose complex to replace the ageing Memorial Drive.

"I'm a big believer that it doesn't just have to be Tennis," Cahill explains.

"I think they can do a multi sport complex where we can have Netball, we can have Basketball, we can have other sports, we can have concerts, we can have a stadium that can pay for itself and it doesn't have to be wholly and solely Tennis."

With the major success of the Adelaide Oval redevelopment, fans have been starved of a world class multi purpose venue where we have the ability to attract some of Tennis' current great players in tournament competition.

But Cahill hinted that some plans were recently handed to the State Government in relation to a re-development and is hoping it's not too far away.

"I think there are some great plans been given to the State Government and I hope they take a real good look at it."
