SA SQUASH STAR SELECTED IN NATIONAL TEAM

There appears to be no stopping budding squash superstar Alex Haydon's rise in her sport with her recent selection to the Australian team for the World Squash Federation (WSF) World Doubles Championships on the Gold Coast between June 17 and 21.
Alex, 17, has enjoyed success in various key events in the past 12 months but her form in April (2019) was outstanding. There, she won the Under-19 Girls Australian Junior Open in Sydney and the Under-19 Girls title at the Oceania Junior Championship in Auckland. She also captained the Australian Oceania team. Last year she won the Under-19 girls title at the Youth Olympics, beating New Zealand's Anika Jackson in the final.
The senior team format on the Gold Coast sees Alex join five debutants and regular Australian members in a format which includes men's, women' and mixed doubles.
But before that she is heading to Brisbane this Friday (May 3) to compete in the Professional Squash Association's Sandgate Open Challenger Tournament.
Keen to test herself against more seasoned opponents as she approached the end of her junior eligibility, Alex has drawn seventh seed Australian Slena Shaikh in the opening round.
"I've been starting to play more senior events the last few years just to get stronger competition and that's where I will improve more," Alex commented recently.
"And I'll age out (of juniors) next year and have to play open, so I'll be a lot more ready for that.''
National Coach Paul Price said that Alex was one "of our young stars making great progress.''
