Milestone match for Waddington

Tango Netball Club head coach Scott Waddington will coach his 200th Premier League match tonight against Newton Jaguars. Waddington’s path to the major milestone was accumulated across three State League teams including 130 games at Cougars, 17 at Matrics and tonight being his 53rd match in charge at Tango. “It’s very satisfying to achieve 200 games,” Waddington said. “I know all matches can’t be memorable as I have suffered many heavy defeats along the way, along with some amazing wins. One of Waddington’s major highlights was when he debuted Sarah Klau at the Cougars when she was just 14-years-old. Klau yesterday was selected in the Australian Diamonds World Cup team. “Sarah Klau is probably the number one highlight (in my career) as we at the Cougars were the first to offer her opportunities as a 14-year-old,” he said. “Another player was Amehlia Schmidt who I have helped coach way back as a 9-year-old, through to Premier League as a 15-year-old and later she went on to play for the Thunderbirds. Amehlia is now a very successful premiership player at Contax. “Also I can’t forget my own daughter Leigh (Clough, nee Waddington) who won a premiership with the Thunderbirds. Being a head-coach can bring many challenges along the way, although Waddington believes his successful coaching journey has been helped by having three daughters that have all played netball. “Also some people thought I was too soft to coach at this level. However I think it’s more empathy and understanding that has assisted me,” he said. “Especially having three daughters who have all played netball at various levels. I believe this has helped me to be a better coach by always being open and honest about their journey with the different coaches they have experienced along the way.” Tango are currently undefeated after the first two rounds and tonight play Newton Jaguars who will be desperate to win their first match of the season.
